A Case Study On

Core Strategies: Network Strategy

A department store needed to revitalize its store network. Its customer experience was inconsistent, many locations had leases coming due, and competition was intense.

Brought in to work with the executive team to develop their store network revitalization strategy. My work included:

  • Partnering across functions to help the team develop their vision for their store of the future, reflecting the retailer’s brand, category strategies and digital engagement plans
  • Using analytics, research and insights from other markets to:
    • Determine the minimum store size needed to effectively present the brand and product offering in the store of the future
    • Develop the approach for scaling up the offering for larger markets, including how to scale up different product categories
    • Assess and develop plans for individual locations based on market size and composition, real estate opportunities and current store performance
  • Pulling this together into a comprehensive network strategy for board approval, including new store openings, store expansions and store closures, with execution staged over the course of multiple years

The Results

Sales at the pilot store have more than doubled since its renovation. Store closures have been completed without issue. The new store model is being rolled out across the network with ROIs greater than 15%.
